Glossary of terms

An agreement on the basis of which designated road sections may be used and which sets out the conditions for paying the toll. Under the prepaid toll regime, it is concluded when the vehicle is registered, and one toll account is kept for each agreement, to which one or more vehicles may be registered. 

A component of the toll that reflects the costs caused by vehicle traffic. It applies separately to costs related to CO₂ emissions and to costs related to air pollution. 

The classification of a vehicle according to its specific CO₂ emissions, which is one of the parameters used to determine the toll rate. There are CO₂ emission classes 1 to 5, and a vehicle powered exclusively by electricity or hydrogen is in CO₂ emission class 5. If the CO₂ emission class cannot be determined from the vehicle documents, CO₂ emission class 1 is assigned. 

Checks on whether vehicle operators and drivers comply with the obligation to pay the toll and with other obligations under the Toll Act, in particular the correct use and setting of the on-board unit. The control is carried out by the Toll Collection Administrator in cooperation with the Police Force using stationary and mobile control equipment. Confirmed suspected violations (toll incidents) are dealt with as offences or administrative infringements. 

The telephone line of the Toll Services Provider, +421 222 122 444, which from 1 October 2026 answers questions about the changes to the electronic toll system and about vehicle registration. Information about its availability and language support can be found in the Contacts section. 

A staffed point where you can register a vehicle, collect and return an on-board unit, top up the prepaid toll and obtain information. Selected customer points will be available from 1 December 2026 and the entire network from 1 January 2027. The list of customer points will be available on the information portal from 24 November 2026. 

A section of a motorway, class I road or class II road on which electronic toll collection applies. A non-zero toll rate applies on designated sections of motorways and selected class I roads, and a zero toll rate applies on the other designated sections. Designated road sections are laid down in Decree of the Ministry of Transport and Construction of the Slovak Republic No. 228/2020 Coll., as amended, and an overview of them is provided on the Tolled sections page. 

A legal entity authorised to provide the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) that has concluded an agreement with the Toll Collection Administrator. Customers using EETS handle registration and customer services through their EETS provider.

Payment of an electronically calculated toll amount according to the vehicle category, vehicle emission class and number of axles of the vehicle for the distance travelled on a designated road section, based on electronically obtained data.

A toll collection system in which the obligation to pay the toll is activated and linked to the automatic detection of a vehicle's presence on a designated road section through communication with the on-board unit in the vehicle or automatic recognition of the vehicle registration number. The electronic toll system is owned by Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, a. s.

The emission standard of a vehicle (EURO 0 to EURO VI) stated in the vehicle documents, which is one of the parameters used to determine the toll rate. If it is not stated in the vehicle documents, EURO emission class 0 is used to calculate the toll. 

A service that allows tolls to be paid in several Member States of the European Union with a single on-board unit and on the basis of a single contract with an EETS provider. It is governed by Directive (EU) 2019/520 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the interoperability of electronic road toll systems. 

A means of cashless payment issued by fuel card issuers. From 1 December 2026, vehicles can also be registered through partner fuel card issuers. A list of these issuers will be available on the information portal from 24 November 2026. 

The official internet portal www.emyto.sk, which provides information on electronic toll collection in Slovakia in several languages.

A component of the toll intended to cover the costs of building, operating, maintaining and developing roads. Toll rate discounts are applied to the infrastructure charge. 

A toll consisting of an infrastructure charge and charges for external costs related to CO₂ emissions and to air pollution caused by traffic. 

A secure part of the information portal www.emyto.sk, which will be made available on 1 December 2026. In the My Toll customer zone, it will be possible to register vehicles online and upload the required documents and, after registration, to manage the toll account, vehicles and payments. 

The number of axles of a vehicle or vehicle combination, including the trailer. It is one of the parameters used to determine the toll rate for vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of 12,000 kg or more that are not intended for the carriage of passengers. The driver must set the correct number of axles in the on-board unit, for example when attaching or detaching a trailer. 

A technical device in the vehicle that enables the vehicle to be uniquely identified and data to be obtained for the purposes of electronic toll collection. The on-board unit is assigned to a specific vehicle. 

A method of paying the toll in which the toll is paid in total for the whole billing period, usually one month. Based on a decision of Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, this regime will end on 31 December 2026. 

The amount on the toll account from which the toll charged is deducted and which can be increased by topping up the prepaid toll. If several vehicles are registered on the toll account, they share the balance. If the balance is insufficient, the on-board unit or the entire toll account is blocked. 

A method of paying the toll in which designated road sections may only be used after the prepaid toll has been topped up, and the toll charged is deducted from the balance. The toll is paid according to the applicable rates without additional administrative fees and without any minimum contractual commitment. From 1 January 2027, it is the only method of paying the toll in the national electronic toll system. 

A payment that increases the prepaid toll balance on the toll account. An initial top-up of the prepaid toll is part of vehicle registration. 

The amount paid by the vehicle operator at registration for the provision of an on-board unit for each vehicle. The on-board unit can only be collected after the deposit has been paid, and the deposit is refunded when the on-board unit is returned. 

The mass of a vehicle or vehicle combination stated in the vehicle documents. It is one of the parameters that determine whether a toll must be paid and the amount of the toll rate. 

An electronically calculated amount for the use of designated road sections. It is calculated on the basis of the distance travelled and the toll rate. 

An account under the prepaid toll regime to which one or more vehicles, including an entire fleet, are registered. It contains an overview of the tolls charged, payments and the prepaid toll balance. A vehicle operator may also open several toll accounts, for example to manage vehicles or costs separately. 

The entity that ensures toll collection and receives toll payments. Under the Toll Act, the Toll Collection Administrator is Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, a. s. It provides customer services through the Toll Services Provider. 

A person who is obliged to pay the toll under the Toll Act. 

The amount in euros, excluding VAT, per 1 km travelled on a designated road section, on the basis of which the toll is calculated. It depends on the type of road section, the vehicle category, the CO₂ emission class, the EURO emission class and the number of axles. The toll rates are laid down in Government Regulation of the Slovak Republic No. 418/2024 Coll., as amended. 

A reduction of the toll rate for the infrastructure charge under the system of discounts laid down by government regulation. It is granted for vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3,500 kg that are not intended for the carriage of more than nine persons including the driver. An overview of the discounts is provided on the Toll rates and discounts page. 

A company that, on the basis of an agreement with the Toll Collection Administrator, provides toll services to toll payers under the prepaid toll regime, in particular vehicle registration, provision of on-board units, receipt and recording of prepaid toll payments, and customer support. The Toll Services Provider is CzechToll s.r.o.

A vehicle without its own propulsion designed to be towed by a motor vehicle, for example a trailer or semi-trailer. The axles of the trailer are included in the number of axles of the vehicle combination. 

The classification of a vehicle for the purpose of toll calculation based on its characteristics. The toll rate takes into account the vehicle category together with the type of designated road section, the CO₂ emission class, the EURO emission class and the number of axles. 

A combination consisting of a motor vehicle and one or more trailers. For toll purposes, the technically permissible maximum laden mass and the total number of axles of the combination are taken into account. 

A vehicle for which no toll is paid even though it uses designated road sections. Vehicles exempt from toll payment are laid down in Section 3 of the Toll Act, and an overview of them is provided on the Tolled vehicles page. 

A person who has concluded an agreement on the use of designated road sections with the Toll Collection Administrator or with an EETS provider. If no such contract has been concluded, the vehicle operator is the holder of the vehicle entered in the vehicle registration certificate or in an equivalent foreign document, unless the Toll Act provides otherwise. 

Registration of a vehicle in the new electronic toll system, which will go live on 1 January 2027. Re-registration will be possible from 1 December 2026 online in the My Toll customer zone, in person at selected customer points or through partner fuel card issuers. Before its first journey from 1 January 2027, the vehicle must be registered in the new system and equipped with a new on-board unit. 

The recording of the data on a vehicle and its operator that are needed for electronic toll collection. It includes the submission and verification of data and documents, the conclusion of contractual relationships and the assignment of an on-board unit to the vehicle. Registration also includes an initial top-up of the prepaid toll and payment of a refundable deposit for each on-board unit. 

A vehicle document (Part I and Part II) containing data on the vehicle and its holder. It must be submitted for each vehicle at registration; for a vehicle registered abroad, the vehicle registration document or another equivalent document is submitted. 

The number under which a vehicle is entered in the vehicle register and which is shown on its registration plate. The on-board unit is assigned to the vehicle in the electronic toll system on the basis of its registration number. 

A motor vehicle or vehicle combination with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3,500 kg for which a toll is payable for the use of designated road sections (tolled vehicle). Exceptions are vehicles of category M1 and vehicle combinations consisting of a vehicle of category M1 or N1 and a trailer of category O1 or O2. An overview is provided on the Tolled vehicles page.
